We are expecting a fresh load of sawdust to arrive at the farm tomorrow. We use the sawdust in the white hoop barn where the cattle hang out. We try to bring the tractor into the barn every couple of days to "rip the pack" which means that we basically rake it to get the pack composting and heating up better. After we turn it all over, we put fresh, dry sawdust on top. This is basically like clean sheets and a warm bed for the cattle. Everyone else has...

We hope you are all staying warm! These days are perfect for letting a soup or stew simmer on the stove or cooking a roast low and slow in the oven to give your kitchen a little extra warmth. So far, our winter prep is holding up to the test of the weather. The heated water systems we installed this fall are doing their job and we made sure the pigs had extra hay to snuggle up under since they don't have thick fluffy coats like the sheep and bovines....

Winter is here but we haven't seen much snow accumulation and have had on and off warmer weather, but we are in for some much colder conditions this week. That's why Ben and Loren worked hard last week to make sure all of the heated water systems for the animals were up and running. During the much colder conditions, it's important that we keep water available for everyone and that we give them the high quality hay we harvested over the summer since our livestock consumes that hay to intake...

Happy New Year! We started the year off right with eggs from Kelly and Fritz's chickens, french toast and our pork maple breakfast sausage. Then we got to work checking on animals to make sure everybody was happy, had enough feed and gave some of them clean sheets aka fresh sawdust or hay bedding. In the winter, you'll notice many updates refer to animal checks and daily chores. On top of those daily chores, this week Ben and our fantastic farmhand Loren will be weighing and sorting cattle, which helps...

Ben, Kelly and Fritz had a great week away from the farm visiting family. We ate a lot of food and took a lot of naps. We are thankful Nancy, Helm, Loren and Karen held down the fort and were able to pack orders and get them out to you all last week. This week Ben is going to work on adding a roof over the new heated water station for our sheep so they can keep their wool dry and so that the snow doesn't pile up in the...

By Jake Claro, Farm to Plate Director Vermont continues to lose dairy farms at a devastating rate – as of July the state had lost 66 this year alone. As dairy farmers struggle with whether or not they can survive in their current industry many look to what could be next. The Nottermann family, owners of Snug Valley Farm, long ago figured out that their post-dairy success lay in being able to tell their story. Ben Nottermann knows that telling a good story is key to a successful diversified farming operation in...
